Are you wondering if there’s a TRAP class available for your child in your local area? While we strive to offer many classes across various locations, the unfortunate reality is that not every neighborhood has access to TRAP programs. However, we have a fantastic solution for those eager to provide their children with an enriching, multi-sensory learning experience: our “Parent TRAP.”
The Parent Trap: A Transformative Journey of Support and Empowerment in Music Therapy
Embarking on my role as a provider of the TRAP learning program has been one of the most rewarding chapters in my professional journey as a music therapist. A standout aspect of this program is my innovative initiative, known affectionately as The Parent Trap (and no, it’s not related to the Lindsay Lohan movie!). This playful name captures the heart of what I do, which involves a dedicated six-month period where I immerse myself in the homes of my neurodivergent clients and their families—parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all play an integral part.
In the first three to four months of this initiative, I develop customized templates, exercises, and interventions that specifically cater to the unique needs of each client. It’s a tailored approach, ensuring that every family feels supported and understood. Then, in the subsequent two to three months, I shift gears to empower family members by training them on how to effectively implement these specialized exercises. These exercises address a variety of neurodivergent diagnoses, including dysgraphia, dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, and Down syndrome, equipping families with the tools they need to foster growth and learning.
A key element of my program is enhancing social awareness surrounding sensory deprivation. I provide essential resources and practical tools that families can utilize in my absence, ensuring that the support continues well beyond our sessions. Additionally, I’m proud to offer a complimentary lifetime subscription to my hotline. This means that families have ongoing access to expert guidance and support, whether they reach out a decade from now or just a few months later. This unwavering commitment to long-term assistance and empowerment is truly what makes The Parent Trap a cornerstone of my work, illustrating the profound impact that informed, compassionate support can have on families navigating neurodiversity together.
My wife and I are very grateful to be working with Casey. Our 12-year-old son struggles with ADD and auditory processing, which has led to challenges with controlling his emotions and focusing in school. Our family just completed six months of TRAP learning, and it’s making a tremendous impact on his life. He’s having the best year in school that we can remember, including his schoolwork, managing stress, and emotional regulation. Casey is a first-class person and a master of his craft.

Our family is very grateful for Casey – our teen son has both an interest in percussion and overlapping neurodiversities. We’ve seen progress in our son’s mental and emotional processing and look forward to continue benefitting from TRAP. Casey is perceptive, calm, encouraging, a great listener, and brings his years of wisdom into each situation, no matter how unique.

Our Mission
At The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP), our mission is to empower individuals with various disabilities to thrive. We integrate drums and percussion instruments as creative learning tools that nurture essential life skills while enhancing the mind, body, and spirit of our students.
TRAP serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as typical young children, utilizing a unique methodology where rhythm acts as a key to unlocking basic life and learning skills, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. We equip our students with the confidence and tools they need to succeed in the world.
Our Person-Centered Approach
At TRAP, we believe in meeting individuals where they are. By listening to our students, we practice person-centered principles that shape every aspect of our program. Our lesson plans are tailored to address the unique needs of each student, built on a foundation of evidence-based methods and collaborative teamwork.
We encourage our students to express their goals, guiding them along an Appropriate Path to Success. Our educational program merges artistic experiences with clear educational objectives, creating an engaging and fun environment that fosters mastery of coordination, concentration, and overall academic achievement.
Who We Serve
Our members come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and span a broad age range— from just 1 year to over 85 years old.
Individuals with Disabilities
We support individuals with various diagnoses, including:
- Mild to profound cognitive disabilities
- Cerebral palsy
- Down syndrome
- ADHD
- Alzheimer’s
- Autism
- Mobility, hearing, and vision impairments
- Traumatic brain injury
Young Children
We’ve crafted age-appropriate curricula for both typical children and those with differing abilities, specifically for ages 18 months to 5 years. This program has also proven effective in lower grade levels.
A Community of Collaboration
The success of the TRAP program is rooted in emotional openness and a willingness to collaborate. Since our inception in September 1997, we have evolved through the contributions of many, including Recreational Therapist Libby Whaley, Cesar Hernandez, and dedicated facilitators around the globe.
I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight the invaluable musicians who have generously dedicated their time and effort to this initiative. Their passion has been integral to our journey, representing the heart and soul of The Rhythmic Arts Project.
