The Powerful Story of Believing: Making a Lasting Impact on Youth
Don’t Stop Believing, Hold On To That Feelin’
Today, I was reminded powerfully of the reason behind my passion and life’s work. Two heartfelt messages that arrived separately but beautifully connected brought me deep reflection on why I chose this path, using music and mentorship as tools for transformation.
In the midst of bustling events, drums resonating with rhythms and young hearts buzzing with excitement, it’s easy to lose oneself in the moment. But then comes a quiet moment—a notification on my phone or a message in my inbox—that grounds me again in the significance of my work.
The first message came gently, expressing an apology for losing touch during a busy, heated event. But more importantly, it contained a profound acknowledgment of the dream I’ve pursued. The words hit deep: “every youth whose life you touch is absolutely amazing… amazing… And I know it will mean everything to them.” The sincerity and depth of this message are a profound reminder that following your dreams isn’t just personal fulfillment; it has a ripple effect far beyond individual achievements. Each child, each youth that you influence positively, carries forward a part of your dream into the world.
Shortly after, another message reinforced this truth, coming from someone who had seen me in action, teaching and mentoring through rhythm and presence. The message read, “When these kids grow up and become adults and look back at these years, it will fill their hearts knowing someone believed in them.” This affirmation resonates deeply because it underscores the power of belief—both self-belief and the belief that others invest in us.
Reflecting on these messages, I understand even more profoundly the duality of the human brain in my approach. The left brain, logical and structured, appreciates the techniques, methods, and structured interventions I utilize in music therapy. The right brain, however, thrives on creativity, emotional expression, and intuitive connection—exactly what these messages captured. My work is a delicate dance between science and soul, structure and spontaneity.
When I first embarked on this journey, I didn’t fully comprehend how deeply my actions and interactions would impact the lives of others. My vision was clear: to inspire, encourage, and facilitate growth in young minds through music, rhythm, and genuine presence. Yet, the full scope of this impact becomes clearer with every event, every interaction, and every heartfelt message.
Each youth I meet comes with their own story, struggles, dreams, and potentials. Each drumbeat, each rhythm, symbolizes the heartbeat of hope, the pulse of possibility, and the resonance of resilience. It is not simply about teaching music; it’s about instilling confidence, resilience, and the belief that they are valued and capable of greatness.
There are moments when exhaustion hits—when long hours, intense sessions, and the emotional weight of mentorship could easily lead to burnout. However, it’s messages like these that rejuvenate my spirit and remind me why I started this journey. The genuine gratitude and recognition from families and observers validate the path I’ve chosen and invigorate my resolve to keep pushing forward.
What I want to share with you, dear reader, is this: never underestimate the impact of believing in someone. Whether you’re an educator, mentor, parent, or simply a friend—your belief can be transformative. Belief offers strength, fosters dreams, and validates aspirations. It creates a legacy of empowerment.
Moreover, this journey of belief and mentorship has taught me invaluable lessons about myself, too. I have learned patience, deeper empathy, the importance of authentic communication, and the profound value of simply showing up—being consistently present for someone else. Each lesson not only enriches my professional endeavors but enhances my personal growth profoundly.
As I read and re-read these messages, I’m reminded that the real reward isn’t just the fulfillment of my dream but seeing countless dreams ignited and nurtured in those I have the privilege to mentor.
So I encourage each person reading this to take a moment and reflect on their own impact. Think of someone you could uplift today, someone whose potential might be waiting for your belief to unlock it. Your voice, your encouragement, your belief could be the catalyst that transforms a life.
Thank you to everyone who believes—in dreams, in potential, and in each other. You are creating ripples of positive change more profound than you might ever realize.
