The Pulse of Healing: A Rhythm for Those Who’ve Been Through It

The Pulse of Healing: A Rhythm for Those Who’ve Been Through It

By Casey Muze | AvenueSpeak LLC

She sat on the edge of the folding chair, fists clenched in her lap.

Didn’t speak.
Didn’t blink much either.
She’d been through court dates, case managers, mandatory classes.
But this was something different.

No clipboard.
No questions.
Just a drum in front of her.

I could see the storm in her body language—every cell on high alert.
She wasn’t just nervous. She was wired for war.
Post-incarceration will do that to you.
So will trauma. So will surviving what no one else saw.

She wasn’t there to make friends.
She was there because someone in her sober living house told her about “the drum guy” who didn’t make you talk about your pain. Just let you feel it.

She looked at the drum like it might betray her.
I didn’t rush.
Just started the session like I always do—with breath. Then rhythm. Then space.

The group followed.
Some tapped soft. Some loud.
A room full of people carrying different stories, beating out the same truth:
We’re still here.

She didn’t play at first.
But halfway in, I heard it. A low, steady thump-thump.
Then again.
And again.

Not showy. Not loud.
But real.

And in that rhythm, I saw something move in her—something words hadn’t been able to touch.
The locked door inside her chest cracked open, just a little.
Enough for breath.
Enough for healing to begin.

🔥 The Pulse of Healing: Trauma Has a Rhythm—So Does Recovery

You can’t think your way out of trauma.
You can’t logic your way through grief.
You can’t talk your way past what your body still remembers.

But you can feel your way home.
And that journey starts with a pulse.

The Pulse of Healing is not a music program.
It’s not a motivational speech.
It’s a trauma-informed rhythm experience designed to reconnect people with their body, emotions, and voice after they’ve been torn apart by life.

This work is for people who feel stuck, numb, burned out, angry, ashamed, anxious—or nothing at all.
It’s for the ones who’ve been told to “just get over it,” and for the ones who never had the language to say what happened to them in the first place.

And it works—not through talking, but through rhythm.

What Trauma Does

Trauma hijacks the nervous system.
It changes how the brain processes threat, safety, and connection.
It keeps the body on high alert, or worse—locks it into shutdown.

Many people don’t even realize they’re living in survival mode because it’s all they’ve ever known.

  • You flinch when there’s no danger.
  • You shut down when someone gets too close.
  • You push people away, but crave being seen.
  • You smile while you’re silently screaming inside.

That’s not brokenness. That’s adaptation.
That’s your body doing whatever it took to keep you alive.

But survival isn’t the same as healing.
And that’s where The Pulse of Healing begins.

What Rhythm Does

The power of rhythm is ancient.
Before we had words, we had the drum.
The heartbeat. The footstep. The lullaby.

Rhythm regulates the nervous system, activates both hemispheres of the brain, and creates a sense of structure, safety, and flow.
It grounds the body.
It opens the door for emotional release.
It bypasses shame and taps directly into truth.

When guided with intention and safety, rhythm becomes not just music—but medicine.

What Happens in a Session?

A Pulse of Healing session is a sacred space. It’s soft, strong, and rooted in deep respect for every person’s story—whether it’s told aloud or not.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Grounding and Breathwork
We begin by anchoring the breath and connecting to the body. This calms the fight-or-flight response and creates internal space for what’s coming.
  • Simple Drumming Exercises
No skills required. You’ll be given a drum or percussion instrument and guided through safe, repetitive patterns designed to stimulate balance and regulation in the brain.
  • Call-and-Response and Group Flow
Participants follow the rhythm in community—practicing active listening, expression, and synchrony with others, which builds trust and relational safety.
  • Silence, Reflection, and Optional Sharing
We make space for integration. No one is ever pressured to speak. But when the body has moved, the voice often follows.
  • Rest and Closure
We close with quiet. With breath. With stillness. Leaving space for what’s surfaced to settle—safely.

Formats Available

The Pulse of Healing can be adapted for:

  • One-on-One Support
Ideal for individuals in recovery, therapy, or reentry. A calm, private setting where rhythm becomes a conversation without words.
  • Small Group Circles
Perfect for support groups, trauma healing circles, or retreats. These are deeply relational, safe containers for group healing and connection.
  • Large Group Workshops & Events
Powerful for shelters, schools, reentry programs, churches, and wellness events. I bring drums for all participants and lead collective healing through sound, movement, and breath.

Who Is This For?

The Pulse of Healing was built for people navigating trauma in all its forms:

  • Post-incarceration trauma
  • Substance use and recovery
  • PTSD and complex grief
  • Domestic violence survivors
  • Youth in unstable homes or foster care
  • Veterans and first responders
  • Therapists, social workers, and caregivers carrying emotional fatigue

Whether you’re in the storm or coming out of it—this rhythm will meet you where you are.

Why It Works

Because trauma lives in the body.
And rhythm speaks the language of the body.

When rhythm is delivered in a safe, supported, and intentional way—it reclaims what trauma tried to steal:

  • Voice
  • Presence
  • Regulation
  • Relationship
  • Hope

And you don’t have to explain a thing.
You don’t have to know what to say.
You don’t even have to believe it will work.

Just bring your breath.
Bring your story.
Bring your silence if that’s all you’ve got.

We’ll start from there.

The Work That Grows From the Pulse

The Pulse of Healing is the heartbeat of what I do.
But the rhythm doesn’t stop there.

From that same rhythm, I’ve built additional programs—each one tailored to serve a different group of people who need connection, structure, and healing through sound.

Whether it’s a child learning how to regulate their emotions, a neurodivergent teen struggling with focus, or a grandmother living with dementia trying to hold onto joy—rhythm makes room.

Here’s how that rhythm branches out:

🧠 TRAP Learning

Trauma-Responsive Adaptive Programming for Neurodivergent Youth & Adults

TRAP Learning was born from a need I saw over and over again: neurodivergent students, especially those with autism, ADHD, sensory differences, or learning disabilities, struggling to connect in classrooms or therapy spaces that weren’t built for them.

These individuals often live in a world that demands constant adaptation without offering safety or rhythm.

In TRAP sessions, I use drumming to:

  • Support executive functioning (focus, organization, attention)
  • Encourage nonverbal communication through call-and-response
  • Create predictable, rhythmic patterns that reduce anxiety and overstimulation
  • Reinforce emotional regulation in a non-threatening, playful way

Whether it’s in a school, day program, or one-on-one setting, TRAP brings the power of rhythm to brains that work differently—but beautifully.

👵🏽 Percussion Pathways

For Seniors, Memory Care & Elder Communities

When memory fades, rhythm remains.

That’s the principle behind Percussion Pathways, my program for elder care and dementia support. I’ve seen firsthand how rhythm unlocks smiles, stories, and connections long thought lost.

This work is gentle. Tender. Full of grace.

In Percussion Pathways, we:

  • Use familiar rhythms and songs to spark long-term memory
  • Reduce restlessness and agitation through soothing percussion patterns
  • Foster joy and connection in group settings
  • Invite caregivers to engage with their loved ones in meaningful, musical ways

These sessions are ideal for memory care facilities, assisted living, adult day centers, and in-home caregiving environments. They’re not just therapeutic—they’re humanizing.

🧒🏽 Percussion Pals

For Daycare & Early Childhood Development

Percussion Pals brings rhythm into the lives of our youngest learners.

In this high-energy, developmentally rich program, I use drumming and movement to support:

  • Language and vocabulary development through musical storytelling
  • Listening skills and social interaction through group rhythm games
  • Fine motor coordination and spatial awareness
  • Emotional regulation and early expression of feelings

We dance. We play. We listen.
And underneath all that fun, kids are learning how to connect—with themselves, their peers, and the world around them.

Perfect for:

  • Daycares
  • Pre-K classrooms
  • After-school programs
  • Head Start initiatives

This isn’t just noise—it’s the foundation of learning through joy.

A Rhythm for Every Season

Whether you’re a mental health provider, an educator, a caregiver, or a concerned parent—you’re not alone in trying to meet the emotional and developmental needs of those you serve.

My work is designed to walk alongside yours, using rhythm as a tool for regulation, connection, growth, and healing.

It all starts with a beat.
