The Beat of My Life: A Journey from Liberty City to Caldwell Arts Academy 63
The journey began in 2002 when my next chapter unfurled within the confines of the academy. It was a year bursting with excitement and self-discovery, but it was also marked by the release of a film that profoundly impacted my life: “Drumline,” starring Nick Cannon.
This film was far more than mere entertainment for me; it became a catalyst for transformation and inspiration, unveiling dreams I hadn’t fully realized I possessed. At the time, I was residing in the quaint, sometimes overlooked town of Liberty City, Texas—locally known as Sabine—where musical opportunities felt limited. Yet, within the tight-knit community, I was part of a humble percussion section of just three, harboring aspirations of one day playing in a full-fledged Drumline. It felt like a whole different universe, vibrant and exhilarating, a realm I yearned to explore.
Earlier that same year, fate had led me to the Lynn State University Marching Band’s performance at Longview Stadium, an event that left an indelible imprint on my soul. I remember sitting in the stands, utterly mesmerized as the band took the field. The rhythms resonated with my very being, the thunderous beats echoing the aspirations I held deep within.
As the halftime show unfolded, it became clear to me—this was not just a performance; it was an embodiment of passion and unity, a blend of hard work and artistry that captured my imagination and propelled me toward my goal: I wanted desperately to be part of a Drumline, and particularly, I set my sights on Grambling State University, renowned for its rich musical legacy.
2002 also marked a significant transition in my life—the last year I would call Liberty City home. Shortly after, my family relocated back to Longview, Texas, where I enrolled in Pine Tree High School. This change opened the door to new experiences and, most importantly, the opportunity to join their Drumline. It felt like entering a new world, one filled with camaraderie and relentless passion for drumming. I vividly remember immersing myself in the rigorous yet exhilarating world of rudimental drumming, each beat reinforcing my determination.
The memories of Drumline camp at Beaver Spin linger still, where friendships were forged through shared challenges and late-night practice sessions. Competing against local schools, especially during Friday night battles with Marshall High School, sparked a fire within me, driving us to perfect every cadence and rhythm. Pine Tree High School’s Drumline was a force to be reckoned with, a testament to hard work and talent, unmatched by any rival in our district.
Throughout this vibrant tapestry of experiences, Drumline has remained a steadfast beacon in my life. Its rhythms played a significant role in shaping not only my musical identity but also my path in education and therapy. Music became a bridge, connecting my passions and guiding me toward meaningful interactions and relationships in my professional endeavors. Fast forward to 2023—a year that brought everything full circle when I received an unexpected text from Young Audiences of Northeast Texas.
They reached out with an invitation to lead Drumline instruction for Caldwell Fine Arts Academy. It was a call I answered without a moment’s hesitation, feeling as if the universe had orchestrated this moment just for me. Preparing to mentor and share my experiences with the young drummers at Caldwell Arts Academy felt like a profound honor, an opportunity to not only teach rhythm and technique but also to inspire the next generation to pursue their own musical dreams, just as “Drumline” had inspired me so many years ago. In this way, the legacy of music continues, weaving itself through the stories and aspirations of those willing to embrace the beat of their hearts.
